The Voices of Care survey found that 1 in 5 staff nurses and 14% of per diem nurses plan to transition to travel nursing.
OMAHA, Neb. — Medical Solutions, which connects nurses and allied health clinicians with hospitals and healthcare systems, has released findings from its annual Voices of Care survey. One key finding reveals 19% of staff nurses plan to transition to a travel nursing role. Additionally, 14% of per diem nurses indicated an intention to transition to travel nursing.
The 2023 Voices of Care survey gathered responses in December 2023 from 7,117 registered nurses. This included traveling, staff and per diem nurses. The study uses survey responses to provide insights that can better inform healthcare facilities about characteristics, attitudes, and behaviors of nurses.
By leveraging these insights, healthcare organizations can tailor their recruitment and retention strategies to better meet the needs and expectations of their employees.
“Recognizing the reasons driving nurses’ transitions, whether towards travel nursing or other paths, is essential,” said Scott Armstrong, Vice President of Client Growth at Medical Solutions. “By understanding their preferences, we can facilitate effective communication between nurses and our partner facilities. This paves the way for a mutually beneficial relationship that not only improves patient care but also enhances overall staff satisfaction.”
The survey uncovered key reasons nurses choose to travel, including better salaries, reduced involvement in workplace politics, and flexible schedules.
“In the midst of a national nursing shortage, it’s important to stay attuned to nurses’ needs and motivations,” said Patti Artley, Chief Nursing Officer at Medical Solutions. “By prioritizing nurses’ well-being and aspirations, we can navigate the challenges of the nursing shortage while ensuring fulfilling and sustainable career paths for healthcare professionals.
